Who We Are
The North Charleston Sewer District (District) is a Special Purpose District created by the State Legislature to provide sanitary sewer service. Originally the District only served unincorporated Charleston County. However, with the incorporation of the City of North Charleston, and the expansion of several other municipalities, the District now serves portions of the City of North Charleston, City of Charleston, Town of Summerville, Town of Lincolnville along with areas of Berkeley and Dorchester counties. The District covers approximately sixty square miles and maintains over five hundred miles of sanitary sewer pipe, sixty pump stations, and one wastewater treatment plant serving over 31,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
The District is governed by nine Commissioners appointed to two-year terms by the Governor. The District is funded by sewer collections and does not collect taxes. We encourage you to browse our budget and annual financial report to see the District’s strong financial position.
We are guided by our strategic plan where our primary purpose is to provide a sanitary sewer system that ensures the health and safety of our stakeholders. In order to be successful, our employees strive for six core values which are also embedded into yearly appraisals:
- Focus on serving the customer and community
- Protect the environment
- Promote innovation and continuous improvement
- Encourage open communication and teamwork
- Act with integrity
- Deliver exceptional results
The District knows the employees are the greatest asset to the organization and we offer fair wages to go along with great benefits to all our 115 employees. We offer tuition reimbursement and extensive training opportunities to help our employees better themselves at work and home. If you are interested in working for the District, please check out the employment tab for current job openings and employee benefits.
Finally, the District strives to maintain fair rates to our customers. We constantly look for ways to reduce costs either through technology and innovation or through reorganization and consolidation.
