NEW: Requirements for Mechanical and Automotive-related Businesses
As of July 1, 2022, the most recent NCSD Sewer Use Ordinance was put into effect. Within the Ordinance, several changes were made. Most notably, there are new requirements for businesses engaged in practices that produce (or have the potential to produce) vehicle maintenance wastewater and discharge the wastewater to NCSD’s sewer lines.
The new requirements apply to:
- Mechanical /automotive repair shops
- Car-washing facilities
- Lube and oil change operations
- Any business where floor drains collect or have the potential to collect vehicle maintenance wastewaters
The new requirements are:
- Complete an oil water separator questionnaire (see below)
- Have a qualified professional properly size and install an oil water separator at your facility (if deemed necessary by-NCSD FOG personnel)
- Submit the design, sizing calculations, plans, and specifications for chosen oil water separator to the NCSD FOG-Department prior to installation
- Connect all equipment and drains with the potential to discharge oil or similar pollutants to an oil water separator
- Maintain the oil water separator at your facility (pump-out and cleaning should only be performed by licensed liquid waste- haulers – see list below)
- Keep all oil water separator maintenance and cleaning records on-site for at least 3 years
- For some businesses, a grit or solids interceptor may be deemed necessary, depending upon the facility’s operations
- Notify the NCSD FOG Department regarding any business changes (change in ownership, opening/closing of business, etc)
